    This course is ideal for existing Domestic Energy Assessors looking to upskill and open doors to career opportunities in the retrofit industry, or those interested in advancing their careers by taking the next steps in the growing field of retrofit.

    Duration and content ​

    This course features 25 guided learning hours plus assessments, with a total expected duration of around 60 hours across 10 weeks. Our expert-led sessions are available either online or at a Retrofit Academy training centre.

    Course details

    The Level 4 Award in Domestic Retrofit Assessment is designed for those looking to become certified Retrofit Assessors and play a central role in improving energy efficiency across the UK. Successfully completing the course will earn you the AIM Qualifications Level 4 Award, fully aligned with PAS 2035 standards.

    This course takes a blended approach to learning, with content delivered through supported online learning modules, followed by a half-day bootcamp, where a specialist tutor will be available to answer any questions. You’ll also complete a virtual property assessment and submit a report based on a Retrofit Academy template to ensure you’re fully prepared for the final assessment.

    The course is made up of nine modules that cover all aspects of retrofit assessment. Each module features extensive learning materials, expert-led sessions, case studies and activities that are designed to give you an in-depth understanding of both theory and practice.

    The modules are as follows: 

    • PAS 2035 and Retrofit Assessments
      Understand the importance of retrofit in addressing climate change, reducing fuel poverty and improving energy efficiency.
    • Retrofit Advice to Customers
      Understand the PAS 2035 requirements when it comes to providing advice, and what as a Retrofit Assessor, you should and should not provide.
    • Context and Significance of Dwellings
      This module covers importance of providing accurate information around location, environment and the classification of a building, which is essential for preparing thorough assessment reports and ensuring that any retrofit work undertaken is appropriately tailored.
    • Assessing the Condition of a Dwelling and Recording Defects
      How to assess the condition of the dwelling and capture information about existing defects. It is critical that defects, including leaks and cracks, are addressed prior to the installation of new measures.
    • Occupancy Assessments
      Capturing data about the number of people living in a property, as well as they ages and lifestyle patterns as a key metric for the Retrofit Assessor to record
    • Ventilation Requirements and Energy Performance of a Dwelling
      This module explains why and how existing ventilation systems should be assessed, and covers estimiating energy usage and cost using industry models such as the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) and Passive House Planning Package (PHPP)
    • Producing Retrofit Assessment Reports
      Equips you with the ability to complete the final assessment reports to be handed to the Retrofit Coordinator.

    For CITB-registered employers, several funding options are available:

    Short Period Qualifications Grant: Receive £600 for each qualification achieved, provided the course is completed within one year.

    Skills & Training Fund: Covers up to 100% of training costs for employers with fewer than 100 staff (up to £10,000), and up to £25,000 for employers with 100–250 staff.

    Employer Networks: Larger groups can get up to 70% of training costs covered via a CITB Employer Network.

    All learners successfully passing the End Point Assessment will be recommended for the award of  Level 4 Award in Domestic Retrofit Assessment from AIM Qualifications an Ofqual-regulated Awarding Body.

    Upon graduation, you will become recognised as a Retrofit Academy Professional Member at the appropriate level, often at Associate Level in your early years of practice. You can progress through Practitioner levels to ultimately apply for Retrofit Academy Fellowship.

    Becoming a Certified Retrofit Advisor also opens the door to a range of services designed to support your career and professional development provided by The Retrofit Academy. The first 12 months are FREE post-graduation. The ongoing membership fee is £195 plus VAT per year.

    After you have completed the certified retrofit Advisor course, you will gain access to the Retrofit Academy Hub providing:

    As a regulated qualification, the Level 4 Award in Domestic Retrofit Assessment has some specific eligibility criteria. The minimum requirement for all methods of study is a Level 3 Domestic Energy Assessor qualification.

    The course is assessed via a Portfolio of Evidence, Two Property Reports and a Final Professional Discussion.

    All learners are assigned one of The Retrofit Academy’s skills coaches who will provide guidance and feedback on all of your assessments. All coaches are experienced in the retrofit industry and hand-picked for their experience and expertise.

    Upon successful graduation of the Level 4 Award in Domestic Retrofit Assessment, learners who applied from the 1st July 2024 will be awarded TrustMark Accreditation for the role of Retrofit Assessor through the new TRA/Sterling Accreditation Scheme.

             

    The Level 4 Award in Domestic Retrofit Assessment is an eligible qualification for current and ex-military personnel under the Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service (ELCAS).

    Clive Rowland - Lead Tutor

    Clive has over 15 years’ experience in the retrofit industry, including energy assessments of existing and new build dwellings, thermal imaging, air pressure testing, building forensics, post occupancy evaluation and building performance monitoring. He co-wrote and delivered the training for one of the modules for the PAS 2035 Retrofit Co-ordinator qualification and was part of the advisory panel for the Green Deal Advisor National Occupational Standards.

    Richard is a Professor of Building Performance at the University of Salford and Technical Director of the Energy House 2.0. A Chartered Building Surveyor, he specialises in building physics, energy efficiency, and energy performance, with a strong focus on advancing sustainable practices in the built environment.

    Martin Callachan - Course Editor

    Martin is a qualified Building Surveyor specialising in retrofit under PAS2035. With over a decade of experience in the housing sector, Martin has held roles in tenancy management, property maintenance, and estates management, now focusing on sustainability and retrofit.

    He has conducted thousands of Retrofit Assessments and currently works as a Retrofit Coordinator and Project Lead on large-scale, whole-house retrofit projects across the UK.

    Martin combines practical expertise with a passion for educating professionals in the field of retrofit and sustainability.

    Career Development Opportunities

    Retrofit Assessors typically earn salaries of £18k – £25k when training. With experience and once qualified, they can expect salaries of £25k – £50k. There are also career progression routes within the retrofit sector, such as Retrofit Coordinator, subject to further training.
