The ABBE Level 3 Award in Energy Efficiency for Older and Traditional Buildings is an essential qualification for aspiring and qualified retrofitters, as well as construction and housing professionals.
Derived from BS 7913: 2023 – Guide to the Conservation of Historic Buildings, this course develops awareness of older, traditional and vulnerable buildings across the UK.
Once complete, learners will be fully prepared to work on these important projects, offering sound advice and recommendations for the careful integration of energy efficiency measures.
The course is designed to open the door to new opportunities in a lesser-recognised part of the UK’s housing market.
All learners successfully passing the assessments will be recommended for a Level 3 Award in Energy Efficiency for Older and Traditional Buildings from ABBE, an Ofqual-regulated awarding body.
The course is assessed via a portfolio of evidence that you will submit upon completion of the final module. Assessors are experienced retrofit professionals, so your work will be marked by someone who knows the sector best.
The Level 3 Award in Energy Efficiency for Older and Traditional Buildings is a flexible e-learning course that you can study at your own pace.
You must be over the age of 18 to join this course. While there are no other specific entry requirements, those with a background in energy efficiency or construction will find this course easier.
UK housing is among the coldest, draughtiest and least energy efficient in Europe. Much of this is down to the age of the nation’s stock, which includes many historical buildings more than 100 years old.
It’s essential to account for older and traditional buildings as a major aspect of the retrofit challenge. This course is designed to address energy efficiency measures in these properties, giving learners the specialist knowledge needed to upgrade them for life in a low-carbon era.
This course reflects The Retrofit Academy’s standing as the driving force in retrofit skills and knowledge, having been identified, developed and written by some of the sector’s most revered practitioners.
It features three e-learning modules with extensive, interactive teaching materials and self-tests to check your understanding as you progress.
Every village, town and city across the UK has older properties with people living in them. According to ONS figures, one in six homes in England and a fifth of homes in Wales were built before 1900.
This is challenging for improving energy efficiency because designs from previous eras did not place as much emphasis on thermal performance.
But there are also practical challenges to consider given many traditional buildings are subject to protections, limiting the type of improvements can be made.
In short, we need an army of skilled retrofitters who are familiar with the UK’s housing heritage and equipped to improve properties while still maintaining the characteristics that make them special.
